E.ON Business Energy Profile: Tariffs & Reviews

E.ON is the second largest energy supplier in the United Kingdom and a member of the coveted big 6 energy suppliers. They have approximately 3.8 million customers in total and serve at least 100,000 small, medium and large businesses.

The company was founded in 1989 as Powergen, which eventually became E.ON in the United Kingdom in 2004. The rebrand came about to bring it inline with E.ON Group. The rebrand was a complete success and few people today remember Powergen, with ‘E.ON’ the name synonymous with energy supply today.

E.ON is a big investor in renewable energy – they have invested £2.5 billion into renewable projects in the United Kingdom in the last decade, and they operate more than 20 wind farms that produce enough electricity to power 60,000 small and medium-sized businesses. They also offer 100% renewable business electricity.

Key features:

  • 100% renewable electricity for small businesses
  • Fixed tariffs for 1, 2, 3 or 4 years
  • Variable tariffs also available
  • Smart meters and half hourly meters
  • Business energy products for SMEs and large businesses

E.ON Core Services

E.ON’s core services are gas and electricity supply for small and medium-sized businesses, but they also offer energy solutions for larger businesses with products for manufacturers, warehouses and other high energy organisations.

They also offer:

  • Building and energy management solutions
  • Infrastructure setup and management
  • Electric vehicle charging solutions
  • District heating solutions
  • Energy storage and optimisation solutions

All micro, small and medium-sized businesses are offered a smart meter as part of their energy plan, or you can choose a different meter, such as half-hourly. New connections are no problem if you are moving into new premises.

The best way to buy energy with E.ON is with EnergyBillKill – our business energy deals are up to 20% cheaper than going to E.ON direct.

E.ON Business Gas and Electricity Tariffs & Rates

Fixed Business Electricity Plan

E.ON’s Fixed Business Electricity Plan can be fixed for 1, 2, 3 or 4 years. It’s suitable for small and medium-sized businesses. Fixing the price of your energy is a wise move if you think energy prices will rise over the next few years.

100% Renewable Business Plan

E.ON’s 100% Renewable Business electricity plan is available to eligible micro and small businesses, with electricity sourced from E.ON’s renewable assets like wind farms, as well as the grid with renewable electricity certificates.

Variable Business Electricity Plan

E.ON’s Variable Electricity Plan is a 30-day rolling contract energy plan with no exit fees when you switch to a fixed price plan with E.ON in the future. If you have short-term energy needs, this will be the best option for your business.

E.ON Deemed Rates

E.ON’s deemed rates are dependent on location. You will be moved onto deemed rates either if your contract expires and you do not renew or cancel it, or if you move into new premises and there is an existing E.ON supply. If you find yourself on deemed rates, be sure to switch soon because prices are higher than contracted rates.

Pros and Cons of Switching to E.ON

Pros

  • They’re a well-established company
  • Ranked best for complaints handling by Citizens Advice
  • You can fix your tariff for 1, 2, 3 or 4 years
  • Variable tariffs are on a 30-day rolling contract
  • Small businesses can get 100% renewable electricity
  • Free smart meters for micro and small businesses
  • New connections are no problem
  • Industry-leading half-hourly meter installation
  • All corporate clients get a dedicated business account manager

Cons

  • 100% renewable electricity is only for small businesses
  • Their fuel mix isn’t the cleanest
  • Their prices are not always the cheapest

Overall, we would say the pros of switching to E.ON outweigh the cons. They’re not always the cheapest supplier, but this could be said of any supplier.

The only sticking point is their reliance on fossil fuels and nuclear for their electricity, however, if you are an eligible small business, you will qualify for 100% green electricity.

How these ratings compare

E.ON ranks favourably for customer reviews compared to other members of the big 6 and against some smaller energy suppliers

If we combine the 5-star rating systems of Trustpilot and Review Centre, E.ON comes out with a 5.2 out of 10 rating overall. This is better than Scottish Power, for example, who have a 2.3 out of 10 combined rating overall.
